Restaurante O Alfredo

Refeição excelente. Serviço rápido e eficiente. Recomendo vivamente...

One of the complaints about Coimbra is that there simply are not very many good restaurants to choose from especially if you are a foodie like me. That is why I find myself returning to Restaurante O Alfredo time after time after time. Chef Alex has taken the Portuguese standard menu and reinvented it. You will find some traditional Portuguese dishes on the menu together with unique and delicious international entrees often creating a euro/Asian or euro/American fusion. No matter what you chose there will always be a twist that makes them so much more than you might expect particularly if you have been frequenting your everyday Portuguese restaurants. Last night I had a pork chop to die for. When the staff recommended it, at first I was reluctant. I can get pork chops anywhere and they are usually small and thin and tough. What's more there were so many other great and intriguing choices that night on the menu... the Beef Teriyaki; the pork croquettes; the grilled Tuna; the amazing Gazpacho Alentejo style; I could go on. But the wait staff kept going on about how good it was, and trusting her as I do, I decided to try it. OMG... this was not your wimpy chop. The Pork Chop was huge, enough for two (but I ate it all and didn't share. LOL). It was traditionally prepared with oil and salt (nothing more was needed) and oh was it juicy and tender. I will never have a pork chop anywhere else. And just as an aside, Alex makes the best gourmet hamburger in all of Coimbra and I've eaten at all the best hamburger joints. Everything I have ever had on the menu is always good, always consistent, and almost always presented with something unexpected. There is something for everyone on the menu including vegetarians, again something not easily found in Coimbra. And the staff here is top notch. You will be so well treated and so well fed. I can't recommend Restaurante O Alfredo more highly.
